This is a call for papers for an upcoming special issue of Computing in Science & Engineering to be published in September/October 2020. The goal of this special issue is to promote theories and applications of intelligent vehicles. We welcome and encourage submissions from the international community. Intelligent vehicles—also known as autonomous vehicles, driverless vehicles, or self-driving vehicles—operate autonomously by perceiving the environment and implementing a responsive action. A key requirement for intelligent vehicles is that they are able to perceive and understand their surroundings in real time. Multiple sensors, including cameras, radio detection and ranging (Radar), light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and vision sensors are being studied for use in intelligent vehicles. For example, the raw measure of a vision sensor is light intensity. Thus, vision sensors are a rich data source and provide a wide field of view. Preprocessing vision sensor data allows the extraction of various features of environmental objects, such as roads, lanes, traffic signs, pedestrians, and vehicles. This special issue will examine the practicality and theoretical innovation of environmental perception methods for intelligent vehicles, and help advance research and application goals. We are soliciting papers on topics that include, but are not limited to, vision computing in
- lane and road detection for intelligent vehicles;
- traffic sign recognition for intelligent vehicles;
- vehicle detection, tracking, and behavior analysis for intelligent vehicles;
- pedestrians detection, tracking, and behavior analysis for intelligent vehicles, and
- scene understanding for intelligent vehicles.
Of particular interest are manuscripts that describe new algorithms and techniques for vision computing in the environmental perception of intelligent vehicles solutions.

When preparing your manuscript, please see the CiSE-specific author guidelines and the general author guidelines. Manuscripts should not exceed 7,200 words—including all main body, abstract, keyword, bibliography, biography, and table text—and 20 references. Each table and figure counts for 300 words. Articles should be understandable by a broad audience of computer science and engineering professionals, avoiding a focus on theory, mathematics, jargon, and abstract concepts. Accepted papers will be lightly edited for grammar and formatting.
