Dr. Baba C. Vemuri Named Recipient of 2017 IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award
 

Baba VemuriLOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 10 March 2017 – Baba C. Vemuri, full professor at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Department of Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering (CISE), has been named to receive the IEEE Computer Society 2017 Technical Achievement Award.  Dr. Vemuri was recognized “For pioneering and sustained contributions to computer vision and medical image analysis.”

Dr. Vemuri’s research interests include Medical Image Computing, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Information Geometry. He has published over 190 refereed journal and conference articles in the aforementioned areas and received several best paper awards.

A fellow of the IEEE and ACM, Dr. Vemuri has served as a program chair and area chair of several IEEE conferences.

He was an associate editor of several area journals and is currently an associate editor of the Journal of Medical Image Analysis (MedIA) and the International Journal of Computer Vision (IJCV).

Dr. Vemuri received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1987.

The IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award is given for outstanding and innovative contributions to the fields of computer and information science and engineering or computer technology, usually within the past 10, and not more than 15, years. Contributions must have significantly promoted technical progress in the field.

The other 2017 award winners are Professors Hui Lei, Rafail Ostrovsky, and Ingrid Verbauwhede.

The award consists of a certificate and a $2,000 honorarium. The Computer Society plans to present this award at the annual awards ceremony on 14 June 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
